What is Cerebral Palsy?

Cerebral Palsy is one of the most complex of the common permanent disabling conditions and refers to a group of neurological disorders that affect movement, muscle and motor skills. As well as hindering the body’s ability to move in a coordinated way it can also affect speech and sight and can cause seizures. Cerebral Palsy often appears early in life during childhood, yet the symptoms can greatly vary from person to person. Some of the first symptoms of a child who has cerebral palsy may include:

  • A delay in reaching developmental milestones
  • Weakness in the arms and legs that is prevalent in one side
  • Lack of muscle coordination and muscle spasms
  • Fidgety, jerky or clumsy movements
  • Walking on tiptoes
  • Difficulty swallowing, speaking or excessive drooling

Cerebral Palsy can be categorized into four major types:

Spastic : Spastic Cerebral Palsy is the most common type and makes up to 70-80% of cases. This type is caused by damage to the brains motor cortex which controls voluntary movement and as such people often experience exaggerated or jerky movements, stiffness if one part of the body, permanently right muscles or joints, an abnormal gait.

Athetoid : Athetoid makes up about one tenth of cases and is caused by damage to the brain’s basal ganglia and/or cerebellum. This part of the brain is responsible for regulating voluntary motor function and eye movements, while the cerebellum is responsible for balance and coordination. Because of this, the main trait is involuntary movement in the face, torso and limbs and can include floppiness, a stiff or rigid body, posture issues and problems feeding.

Ataxic : Ataxic Cerebral palsy is the least common and primarily caused by damage to the cerebellum affecting balance and coordination. The main symptoms of this type of Cerebral Palsy include difficulty speaking, problems with depth perception, a wide stance when walking, shaking and tremors.

Mixed type : Mixed Cerebral Palsy occurs when the damage to the developing brain occurs in more than one location. This makes up less than 10% of all cases and is usually a combination or spastic and athetoid Cerebral Palsy.
