Nurse Revalidation

How can we help with your revalidation?

Many don’t know, but revalidation is the responsibility of the healthcare professional. Secure Healthcare Solutions are here to help you through this process and to answer any questions you may have. Our clinical leads are senior nurses who are able to conduct appraisals, comment on your fitness to practice. We will help you collect evidence of practice for the purpose of revalidation.

The process of revalidation is the nursing and midwifery council’s (NMC) robust answer to helping nurses and midwives demonstrate their continued adherence to the code’s standards of practice and behaviour, and so safeguarding the public. Effective from April 2016, revalidation will occur in 3 year cycles and without successful you will not be able to practice as a nurse.

Revalidation is important to all nurses, and with this in mind we will ensure to provide clear straight forward advice and documents to support this process.

What is nurse revalidation?

Nurse revalidation is a new process implemented by the NMC to improve public protection. It encourages nurses to take responsibility for their continued professional development and fitness to practice throughout their career. It encourages engagement through discussions with other nurses and encourages reflection on the new code.

Requirements are:

– 450 practice hours or 900 if revalidating as both a nurse and midwife
– 35 hours CPD including 20 hours participatory learning
– 5 pieces of practice related feedback
– 5 written reflective accounts
– Reflective discussion
– Health and character declaration
– Professional indemnity arrangements
– Confirmation

The NMC recommends that you keep a record of the above by creating a portfolio. We can help you with this. You can download the templates provided by the NMC for revalidation using the link here.

How do I prepare for nurse revalidation?

The first thing you need to establish is the NMC’s renewal date. This will be your revalidation date and can be found in your online NMC account. You will need to submit the application with the confirmation 60 days before this date.

This allows the NMC to review your file and if needed come back to you for further information before the renewal deadline. You have three years prior to your renewal date to meet all the requirements for successful revalidation.

How do I submit my revalidation?

You will need to submit your revalidation 60 days prior to the renewal date. You will need to pay your renewal fee at the same time in order to continue to practice.

If your renewal lapses due to non-payment you will be removed from the register and will be required to re-admit to the register, which can take up to 2-6 weeks.

How do I record my information and documents?

The NMC have recommended keeping either an e-portfolio or a paper portfolio holding all of your evidence. You can record your evidence using the NMC template documents found here.

Secure Healthcare can keep your paper portfolio at our premises if required or you can use our e-portfolio to help you.

Do I need to do my confirmation and reflective discussion?

Secure Healthcare offer both services. We can arrange our clinical leads to take you through each requirement. There is a small charge of £40.00 for each service.
