  • Swimming- Always have a lifeguard poolside, and a responsible adult to watch over the individual who has epilepsy
  • Heights- Not having the individual who has epilepsy stand more than twice their standing height without having a responsible individual having close supervision
  • Alcohol- Drinking can have a major effect on your epilepsy and risk of seizures.
  • Drugs- Drugs can trigger seizures, so explaining to children and young adults that they are at high risk of having more seizures when abusing drugs

The use of guards on your heaters and radiators to stop you from falling on them directly and installing smoke detectors to let you know that your food is burning if you were to forget what you are doing in the case of your seizure, it has affected where you can lose your awareness.

Covering your furniture edges that are sharp or stick out, in case of a seizure and you have a fall will protect you from any injuries that can be caused.

Do not lock the bathroom door, in case of a seizure and you are in the bathroom, the access will be easier for the responsible individual to come in and support you in case of an emergency.

Place your saucepans on the back of the stove and not the front with the handles turned away from the edge of the cooker.

Most individuals with epilepsy can take part in sports and other leisure activities but there will be some precautions you might need to take if your seizures are not well controlled. For example, avoid doing water sports on your own such as swimming, wearing a helmet when you are riding a bike, and avoiding certain types of gym equipment, For stuff like this, you can ask the gym staff for advice.

If you are driving or hold a driving license, you must tell the DVLA if you have a seizure. Your license may be taken away if your seizures aren’t under control. When you can reapply for a license depends on the type of seizure you had. For example, for individuals who have seizures it has caused them to lose consciousness, you won’t be able to reapply until they have not had any seizures for a minimum of a year.

Epilepsy does not affect your ability to have children and there’s no reason why you won’t be able to have a healthy pregnancy. If you have epilepsy and are planning on having a baby, make sure you discuss this with your doctor first.

Negative effects on the heart from coffee for health care assistants:

Caffeine’s effect on overall health is one of the biggest concerns when it comes to coffee. The caffeine that is in coffee is high, around 100mg per 8-ounce cup.

Caffeine increases the heart rate and blood pressure, and too much of it can cause things such as anxiety, insomnia, headaches, and stomach irritation. Also, caffeine is very addictive. Whilst being on shift as a Healthcare Assistant/ Nurse, drinking a coffee is the only thing that may keep you going as working through your hard shift or to keep you awake

Roughly, around 400mg is the maximum amount of caffeine that someone should consume in one day, which equals around 4 cups of coffee a day.

On the other hand, a lot of people do not normally consume their coffee black, this is where coffee can go from good to bad! Adding the milk or cream and sugar can significantly increase the calorie, sugar, and fat content. This can cause weight gain, diabetes, and increased blood sugar levels which again can lead to heart disease and other health problems.

When drinking coffee think about the benefits and the problems it can come with, and when adding your sweetener, try something besides sugars and creamers!

Below are some facts that are outlined which are a range of rapid relaxation techniques that can be put into practice in the workplace or when you are at home. This may vary for different individuals.

Whole Body Tension:

Tensing everything in your body and holding that tension is a good way to relieve a lot of pressure in your body. Holding your tension for as long as you can and then slowly release the tension gradually and feel it leave your body. Repeating this 3 times can help with the ease of the stress in your body and will make you feel much lighter and freer.

Imagining air as a cloud

Opening your imagination and focusing on your breathing. When your breathing becomes regular, you’ll automatically become calm, imagine that the air you are breathing is coming to you directly from a cloud and in the form as a cloud, this will fill you and then empty you as you release, in some cases, you can imagine the cloud to be a specific color to help ease the tension and keep you relaxed.

Picking a Spot:

When your head is level and your body is relaxed, pick a spot your eyes can focus on (something in your sight) when you are ready count five breaths backward, when taking each breath close your eyes gradually. Concentrate on each breath, when you get to one, your eyes should be fully closed focusing on the feelings of being relaced and tension free.

Counting 10 breaths backwords

Allow yourself to feel passive, allow yourself to feel indifferent, counting each breath in a slow manor from 10 all the way down to 1. With each count, allow yourself to feel heavier each time and relaxed. When you are exhaling, allow all the tension to release, leaving your body nice and relaxed and tension free.

Using the 5-4-3-2-1 technique

Using the 5-4-3-2-1 technique is a proven technique to relieve yourself from tension. You will purposefully take in the details from your surroundings utilizing each one of your senses. Striving to notice the smaller details that your mind would usually blank out for example the distant sounds around you or the texture of an ordinary object. This technique is best used when you have more time on your hands as it’s not the quickest of techniques.

1. Soaking up the Sun in the morning
When you wake up in the morning you should expose yourself to natural light. We recommend spending time in the morning in the sun, doing this can rest your circadian rhythm and send signals to your brain and tell you that it’s time to start the day. A morning walk outside is also another great way to wake up naturally and get an energy boost. Even if you don’t have time for a morning stroll open up the windows and get the brightness into your home.

2. Regular Exercise
Having around 20 – 30 minutes of exercise or physical activity a day can help you fall asleep during the night. Also, it’ll allow you to fall asleep easier. Being active can also decrease the number of times you wake up in the middle of the night result will lead to deeper sleep. However, it is really important to stay away from the immense type of exercise either one or two hours before bed as this raises your heart rate therefore leaving it more difficult for you to fall asleep.

3. Limit naps during the day
Whilst an occasional nap can be beneficial, anything over the 20-minute mark and then having a regular pattern throughout the day can affect your sleep at night. Naps taken in the latter part of the car are proven to make it difficult for people to fall asleep during normal hours of the night. Naps longer than 20 minutes can cause grogginess or disorientation after waking up.

“ I work as a healthcare assistant in residential care for the elderly and people who require mental support. A typical start to the day is 08:00 am just after a handover from the night staff. Normally they go room to room assisting the residents either getting out of bed or going to prep the food for them. Some sit in either chair or on the side of the bed while others stay in bed and then wait for their breakfast. After this is completed, we then proceed to help the patients get ready.”

Regular tasks that are performed by health care assistants are personal care, washing, and turning patients, (Secure Healthcare Solutions provide Basic life support and Manual Handling training for all staff which is needed). “A Nightshift is a bit different from a day shift when working in care. Personally, I would say I prefer night shifts compared to the day shifts; I normally prefer working nights. During the night shifts, I normally start around 8 pm so this means I would come in a bit earlier around 20-30 minutes earlier. During this time, I would receive a handover on what was done on the day, make myself something to drink, and prepare any documentation needed.”

Dyslexia:
Dyslexia is a general term for a disorder that involves difficulty in learning to read or interpret words, letters, and other symbols, but this does not affect general intelligence. Study shows that most people think that Dyslexia causes people to reverse letters and numbers and see words backward. Reversals do happen but this is a normal part of the development and is seen in most kids until they reach a bit older. This makes it hard to understand short or familiar words or to sound out longer words.

ADHD:
ADHD stands for attention deficit hyperactive disorder. It is a medical condition. A person with ADHD has differences within the brain development system and brain activity that affects attention, the ability to sit still, and self-control. ADHD can affect children and adults in school, at home, and in friendships. People diagnosed with ADHD have a harder time staying focused. ADHD can make it difficult to keep behavior under control. This means kids and teenagers may get into more trouble.

Dyscalculia:
Dyscalculia is a specific and persistent difficulty in understanding numbers that can lead to a diverse range of difficulties with mathematics. It will be unexpected in relation to age, level of education, and experience and it occurs across a variety of all ages and abilities. Dyscalculia is only a learning disorder related to maths, people can still exceed in other subjects such as English or History.

Dysgraphia:
Dysgraphia can appear as difficulties when spelling and or troubling writing down thoughts. Dysgraphia is a neurological disorder that generally appears when children learn to write. Experts are not sure what causes it, but early treatment can help prevent or reduce the problem. Symptoms of Dysgraphia can be children having unclear, irregular, or inconsistent handwriting. Often children with different slants, shapes and children who have problems with upper- and lower-case letters. They also tend to write or copy things in a slow manner.

Learning Disability

Dyspraxia:
Developmental coordination disorder (DCD) also known as dyspraxia, this is a condition affecting physical coordination. This causes a child to perform less well than expected in the daily activities for their age and appear to move “clumsy”

Some symptoms of Dyspraxia are:
 Poor Balance
 Poor Posture
 Lack of Integration of the two sides of the body
 Lack of Rhythm when dancing, doing aerobics
 Clumsy gait and movement
 Exaggerated ‘accessor movements’ such as flapping arms when running
 Tendency to fall or trip and bump into things
