Parkinson’s is a brain disorder that affects the nervous system, leading to shaking, stiffness, difficulty walking, balance, and coordination.

Men and women can both have Parkinson’s disease, although it impacts men 50 percent more than women.

Generally, Parkinson’s first develops around the age of 60, and only about 5 to 10 percent would have Parkinson’s before the age of 50.

Parkinson develops when cells in the brain stop working effectively and the cells are lost over time. The brain cells produce a chemical called dopamine. When the brain can not produce enough dopamine, you will start to notice symptoms, particularly to control movement properly.

There are three main symptoms of Parkinson’s, which are tremor, stiffness, and slowness of movement, however, you may also experience other symptoms, including problems with your sleep, memory, and mental health issues.

Generally, individuals with Parkinson’s initially do not realize that they have this disease, and symptoms gradually worsen over time, as the disease progresses. Currently, there are around 145,000 people in the UK that live with Parkinson’s and it is known to be the fastest-growing neurological condition in the world.

Currently, there is no cure for Parkinson’s disease, and scientists are working hard to find a breakthrough for a cure. There are treatments available to help reduce the main symptoms and maintain quality of life for as long as possible.

During the early stages of Parkinson’s, symptoms are generally mild, and you may not need any treatment, however, it is advised to have regular appointments with a specialist to monitor your condition.

Some research highlights that regular exercise may reduce the risk of Parkinson’s disease, also there is some research that shows that individuals that consume drinks with caffeine are less likely to get Parkinson’s disease than those who do not drink it.

Eating a well-balanced diet containing fruits and vegetables can improve overall health and help with non-movement symptoms.

There is no guarantee that this protects you, however, it is recommended to live a healthy lifestyle with regular exercise and good nutrition and hydration.

Treatments
There is no cure for Parkinson’s disease, however, treatment and domiciliary care and support can help ease the symptoms experienced. Medicines can be prescribed to increase the levels of dopamine in the brain. You may also want physiotherapy to help with movements and speech therapy to help with slurred speech.

Cavell Nurses’ Trust Trust is always looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help spread the word about Cavell Nurses’ Trust or work on specific projects. Could you spare a few hours to help them out to support nurses in need?

Cavell Nurses’ Trust is Edith Cavell’s legacy, a charity set up in her name that, nowadays, supports nurses, midwives and healthcare assistants suffering hardship. They provide support for UK nurses, midwives and healthcare assistants, both working and retired, when they’re suffering personal or financial hardship – often because of illness, disability, domestic abuse and the effects of older age. “We’re a charity, and we help people at no cost to them. We give a listening ear and practical support to everyone who asks for help.”

Mya helped out at Cavell Nurses’ Trust offices

“I am currently studying for my A-levels and after that I would like to pursue my dream career of becoming a nurse; this is why I joined the Cavell Nurses’ Trust on my work experience week, in which I have gained office skills and independent research abilities.

“I have enjoyed my time at Cavell Nurses’ Trust, the people are extremely helpful, positive and friendly, and they have welcomed me into their charity, in which I am greatly thankful for.”

Sabrina took part in a bucket collection at Birmingham New Street

“Collecting at Birmingham New Street Station for Cavell Nurses’ Trust was such a brilliant experience it will stay with me forever. I was helping to support nurses, midwives and healthcare assistants in their time of need. This really touched me as I am a student nurse so I really wanted to raise as much money as I possibility could.

“I love volunteering and going the extra mile to raise awareness as I believe everyone can change someone else’s life for the better.

“I’m always being told I am a happy and smiley person but for members of the public to tell me to “keep up the hard work” and “carry on smiling” is really astonishing! I found it surprising that from just a few hours of volunteering my confidence grew so much and I went from an empty bucket to a heavy bucket of donations quite quickly.

“Volunteering is something I would definitely do again. It was such a great experience considering it’s my first time volunteering for Cavell Nurses’ Trust and I received great support and from the team which is amazing.”

Browse through the history of Cavell Nurses’ Trust, from the life of Edith Cavell herself right through to the latest milestones achieved by the charity.

The winter can be an incredibly difficult season for anyone, but it is especially challenging for the elderly. With a plethora of various ailments and accidents waiting to strike, elderly people are the most at risk during this precarious time of year. These weather-related disasters are best to take precautions against, and the folks with live in care can prevent most of the possible dilemmas associated with the winter by following a few steps.

When It Comes To Hypothermia…

Hypothermia is a state of bodily distress caused by the internal temperature dropping to a dangerous level. The changes that accompany ageing can increase the risk of hypothermia. The possibility of someone having hypothermia is indicated by cold skin, fatigue, confusion, and slowed heart rate. To prevent against the dangers of hypothermia , you should

  • Refrain from being outdoors for very long.
  • Stay dry and keep clothes warm.
  • Layer your outfits so that you can stay warm.

When It Comes To Frostbite…

The indicators of frostbite are ashy coloured skin and pain in the extremities, but frostbite is most likely to affect the nose, ears, cheeks, chin, fingers, and toes. Though it is not normally fatal, it can result in the loss of a limb in the extreme. To prevent against the dangers of frostbite, you should

  • Cover all parts of your body, which includes wearing mittens and something over your face.
  • Run the cold parts of your body under warm water to keep them from becoming damaged.
  • Have your live in care professional ready and able to call 999 if needed.

When It Comes To Shoveling Snow…

Though snow shoveling in and of itself is not a bad thing, it can result in some very unfortunate circumstances for the elderly. The heart works extra hard to pump blood throughout the body during the cold, and this additional strenuous activity can cause some serious strain on the heart. It is also a dangerous activity for people with osteoporosis, because it can result in falls that damage bones. To prevent against the dangers of snow shoveling, you should

  • Watch out for iced pavements, including sidewalks!
  • Hire someone else to shovel the snow and salt the walkways.
  • Keep a pair of nonslip boots nearby to help control possible slipping.
  • Consider the use of additional support options, like a cane fitted with an ice pick.

As you get older, we know how important it is for you to maintain your independence and to keep enjoying the things you have always done. But have you ever considered hiring a professional carer that can help you stay in your own home spending your time doing the things you love instead of having to do the everyday chores that life requires!

We are able to offer care for a wide range of personal requirements, conditions and circumstances. Whether you want companionship and some help around your home; more specialised care for conditions such as dementia or Parkinson’s; or if your family carer simply wants a holiday… whatever you require, your needs are always our priority.
